 Reading 1

The first article that I read up on was all about exactly what a game designer is and does. It breaks it all down enabling the average person to be able to understand the roles and responsibilities of the job.


The role of a game designer in the development of a game is that he or she is the one who comes up with the storylines, levels, character interactions with the surrounding world also other ‘creative aspects’ of the game. It is very important that a game designer consults with his or her colleagues such as ‘game developers’ and ‘artists’ to get the idea of what the final product of the game would be like in final completion. Depending on what way the system works game designers have many routes they can go down in the work line, they can either be completely independent workers focusing on all different aspects of the creative parts of the game or they can also work with a group of people lightning the workload and ultimately leading to a better-developed game. Over the last number of decades, the gaming industry has had a massive boom in popularity ultimately leading to the term ‘game designer’ a very common and well-known career in the industry and is a vital skill to have in order to get the amazing games that we have to date.


 A game designer is a great career path to go down ‘in terms of stability and earning power because of the mass amount of money being generated within the creation of new games, ‘in 2019, $35 billion dollars was generated in revenue’. So over the next ten years, we will definitely be seeing more people investing their time into the creation of new games


Reading 2

In this article, it goes over the difference between what exactly a game designer does compare to what exactly a game developer does. These two separate roles in which a lot of people do get confused over.


Game designers vs game developers are not completely different but still are separate roles. In simple terms ‘Game designers are the visionaries of the video game; game developers turn the vision into reality’. In order for the game to be a functional one, these two roles need to work together to get exactly what both parties vision.


Game designers and game developers have similar subjects when it comes down to the curriculum game design cover topics such as 3D modelling and ‘Animation’, ‘Texturing’, ‘Sculpting’. A lot to do with the art side of the creation of a game but still quite complex when you get into it. Whereas a game developer needs to know everything to do with ‘Programming’, ‘Advanced Algorithms and API’ and ‘Mathematics for Game Development’ so you can see that both sides can be very technical one side being creative and the other being technical. Each requires different skills that would be used in the creation of a game.


Reading 3

This article goes over how a game designer uses UX design for a game. The is one of many different elements that a game designer has to face when designing a game for the player.


A basic overview of what UX design is all about is to ‘improve the user’s experience and the way people interact with the given product’. UX design has different elements in the game such as navigation, ergonomics and usability. The designer’s role in all this is to make the users experience with the final product a fluid as possible, and this can be a hard task. Games shouldn’t be hard for the player to play. They should not be ‘unfair’ the game needs to give a good feedback in order for the player to know what exactly is going to happen, and that is all up to the designer to make this happen. Designers use it to ensure that the player knows exactly what to do in the game and quickly especially if it is a crucial moment when they need to act fast. For example, when a player is about to fight a boss in a game they need to know exactly who the boss is, this could be having a red health bar above the bosses head, this will ultimately lead to better fluidity in the game and players won’t get frustrated.


Designers themselves need to test the game numerous times in order to know exactly if the game works well or not for players if so they need to go back and design better for the player’s experiences. It’s also good for the designer to get player testing done so he or she can get a third-party review on the games UX design.


Reading 4

This article goes over exactly why people like to become game designers in the first place, and what are the benefits behind being a game designer.


There are 5 different points as to why being a game designer is a good idea. The first being is that you can ‘Plug your passion’. Most people that are video game designers are there because they love video games, ultimately leading to their career choices. They get into it because they want to be surrounded by the same people with the same passion, just their love for games. Most people if they have a passion for video games can be quite talented in this industry. 


The second point is because gaming is growing. When you become a game designer you’re merging yourself into a ‘red hot industry’. The industry for gaming is becoming more and more financially rewarding. At the moment most game designers earn between $30’000 to $100’000 a year and growing, so its a great time to enter the industry if you’re looking for a big payday.


The third point is that you are able to lead the call of duty. It takes a long time to create a game roughly around 18-30 months and during this time a game designer has a ‘say’ of what does and doesn’t go in the game. This can be very exciting for people because you get to see how everything turns out in your storyline from start to finish, and it also allows you to ‘give your own personal stamp on a game’.

The fourth being health points. Games in general lead to less stress. This meaning that the profession that you are in will help people with their mental health. Knowing this will want you to design the best game possible for these people. Games are a chance for someone to get away from the real world temporarily and its in your hands how they spend this temporary vacation.


The fifth and final point is game on! Most designers come from a university background and of course, this can be more helpful when the time comes to creating a game. There are however scholarships available to people. But some of the best ways to get into the industry is making a portfolio for yourself. Modify or even create some games to learn exactly how it all works. So technically you don’t need to go to college to become a game designer, but you do need the knowledge and work to show.


Reaction

Over the experience in making the bibliography wasn’t the greatest, the library for the college, to be honest, isn’t the best and is quite confusing at times because it doesn’t give me what I am exactly looking for. I am also not the biggest fan of reading and trying to summarise different articles cause I am more of a creative person than a person that loves to write essays or what not. I, however, can see how this will work for our book in the end, because I actually took the time out on my research I know what my topic is about a lot more so when the time comes to writing the book it will be easier because I will have the information in front of me.
