Game Testing Reading Week 11


Hey there, In this weeks reading we looked at everything to do with game testing. How it is important and what game testing is in general, this week’s readings will really help in the development of any game because it enables us to test any sort of basic feature that would be implemented in the development of a game. There were three readings coved in this weeks reading tasks, they where:

Playtesting is really important when developing a game. You can never really know what the game feels like form a players point of view so there is a lot of game testing involved when it comes to developing a game. It’s a great thing because you get to see all of your hard work from the development come to life.


It’s really important to have game testing done throughout development because developers need to know if their game is fun to play or not. It is good to also make it simple before developing it further so you know that the games basic aspects are fun for the user to play. 


Kids are really good playtesters because not only are they really honest when telling something they also show much more immediate in their reactions


Developers of the game are really bad game testers because they are the ones who actually created the hard code for the game and know how everything works, so its good to get people in that don’t know all the ins and outs of the game. 


There are also different types of game testing:


First being focus: This means focusing one certain aspect of a game example jumping and developing that aspect to its full potential.


Blind Play Testing: Letting the player do what they want so you can find various bugs in the game and fix them within your development


Exploit: The play-tester tries to break your game by finding game-breaking bugs in the game


The whole point of this is to let the tester do exactly what they want finding where the problems are in the game and not to help them because you want to observe your work, trying to find aspects to develop further on your game. Try to get the player to answer questions, so you can get their thought process 



7 Different Types of Game Testing


There are some risks when game testing they are:


  • No Compelling experiences

  • It is not fun to play

  • The game isn’t based on the player it’s based on something else

  • There is nothing new to the game, compared to other games 

  • Lack of good development so the game looks and plays terrible

  • Should be easy enough to play and not impossible


There are also 7 most  popular game testing techniques:


  • Functionality Testing- Testing the basic features in the game to firstly see if it runs properly but also to see if the mechanics that have been implemented in the game work and there are no issues like freezing or crashing.

  • Combinatorial Testing- Testing to see how the player would react to the outputs and inputs of the game itself

  • Ad-Hoc-Testing- Checking for anything wrong with the game such as crashes, bugs glitches etc.

  • Compatibility testing- Testing the game on various different systems and screen resolutions sizes.

  • Clean Room and Tree Testing- Finding small bugs or errors within the game and making sure each of them is recognised and fixed

  • Regression testing- Testing features over and over to ensure that nothing has broken during the time of your development

  • Performance Testing- Testing the game to its final finish of that stage of development to ensure that frame rate etc stays relatively stable



Computer games are serious business and so their quality: particularities of software testing in-game development from the perspective of practitioners 

Over many decades games have changed the face of society forever, however, games have a very unusual feature. Since there are constant changes in software development there was uncertainty in professionals to use automated testing techniques, so they took into account of the changes for flexibility for development.


The study aims to improve on the knowledge regarding the theme and point of existing particularities which is observed in software testing in consideration of a computer game.


The method behind finding the madness based on a case study was made into a survey where data was collected by participants to gather information on this study.


They were asked qualitative questions that are related to game testing. There was a problem however with people doing the survey and not knowing what they were talking about, there was quite a number of these participants. The best participants for this occasion were people who work in the playtesting field and have the logic and knowledge to fill out a survey such as this one. When wanting the best results for a study such as this its best to get people who are in the game industry because they understand what is being asked
