GAME DESIGN IN GENEAL

Hey There,

This week’s readings tasks were all about general games design and how the systems run to make a game function. It also had information about how game ideas should be developed so you can come up with some of the best ideas for your games and commence the long process of getting it developed.

For the first document about What Is A Game Anyway? I found out great information about the functionality of how a game runs with its rules and regulations. Each game needs some sort of system of progression in it whether it be big or small so that the players have a goal, but there needs to be some sort of rules to insure that everything is done fair and square. In this there was an example of a game called Three to Fifteen, where there are a certain number of rules for both players to have a fair chance in winning. The game has such a simple concept but there needs to be some sort of clarity for both players, and is also the same as Tic Tac Toe

Then it proceeded to talk about critical feedback on your games, what is meant by this is so we need to be able to criticize games for what they are and everyone’s opinion has to be valid, otherwise we would never learn from each other to create better games for example, when game Dev's make a game that they like they have to listen to their community for what the community wants in that game. The community gives constructive feedback for the game to develop further.

It is also talking about when people talk about games to each other to commence a conversation about critical feedback on games an example was given about  when Grand Theft Auto meets The Sims meets World of Warcraft, it stated that if you haven’t played one of them then you wouldn’t know what the person is on about it is way to difficult to explain a game in a simple manner to someone if they have ever played it before especially a game like World Of Warcraft, so the gaming industry is slowly coming up with simple terminologies to describe these games in a simple manner.

Then the article went on to describe certain definitions to get a starting point for us to realize what games are all about we need to define what a game is in key words firstly to understand what a game is in the end. Yet none of these definitions are correct because there can be so many but yet there a starting point for us to realize what a game really is

Then…….

I went on to read some of these other articles, they were mainly about the construction side of thing in trying to come up with ideas for creating a game. The main part that I took from The Organic Nature Of Game Ideation, is the formal and informal approach of generating an idea both completely different but in the same way can get the same results for generating your idea e.g. informal could be watching a movie and gaining inspiration form that to create your idea where as formal could be brainstorming and creating an idea and coming up with the same concept which is also time consuming.

Again, with the other reading about Four Basic Methods For Generating Ideas it focused on four separate ways of coming up with the best idea possible Concentration, Brainstorming, Scamper, Ramsey, if you where to use these steps it would make the process easier in designing your game idea. These steps can be useful, but you would need a group of people to get the best idea possible. These ideas are listed to help game developers to create better ideas in the long run over generations of ideas.

That is all for now thanks for reading,

Sam

  1. Hi Sam! I really enjoyed reading your opinion on the articles. Your point on the critical feedback in relation to games got me thinking of the sims 4 and how their game development team are starting to make surveys and gathering the fanbase to make their own game which I think is so important. Listening to the gaming community will increase your chances of developing a successful game. I feel like it would be good if someone designed a game based on a community poll! - Anna Zurawska
