Game Brainstorming
Hey there in this blog I will be talking about what four games I have researched and would love to recreate in Unity3D for my project this semester, I have done 15-20 minutes research on each game to fully understand what each of them are about but, I already kind of know how all of them run because I’ve played them all a lot in the past.
For the first game that I
explored and would like to create is a game like Geometry Dash. Geometry Dash is
a rhythm-based platforming game that has 21 levels within the game that you can
complete. I personally love this game and have played it multiple times on the various
speeds and modes for each level. I have also completed the game fully before back
when I was in school. Geometry Dash was made by a Swedish developer Robert Topala.
Geometry Dash is a simple platformer game played by millions around the world, this leading to many people attempting to recreate it
in Unity3D, this meaning that if I get stuck on how
to do something in Unity specific to Geometry Dash, there is help out there from all the tutorials that I have found, for
instance I found this video of someone recreating it in Unity3D.
Especially for Geometry Dash I
would love to learn the basis of platformer games but in 3D, I don’t think the
creating of the character movement or camera movement would be too difficult
because of the recent Unity3D tutorial that we completed that explains all of
that but mainly I think actually designing the game to look nice would be the
most challenging part. In Geometry Dash the game itself is very futuristic
which makes it fun but also challenging because it’s hard to focus on what’s
actually happening in the game at the time, but that’s what makes the game is
the changing futuristic environment. So, in saying that the most difficult
challenges of making the game would be the game and art design in making it
look realistic and the changing of speeds in the levels. You see in Geometry
Dash as you progress through the level the game speeds up which makes it
difficult, so I would have to do some research on how that mechanism would work.
But overall, I think this would me my top idea for making a game but keeping my
options open on what to create.
For the second idea that I would
like to do for a game is inspired by a game called Subway Surfers. Again, Subway
Surfers is an infinite platformer type game where you are running from a train
warden and trying to avoid obstacles such as trains and there are also jumps
over parked trains that you are to get over with the jump mechanism in the game.
The aim of this game again is like Geometry Dash where you are trying to get as
far as you can, but in Subway Surfers its away from the warden without being
caught. The game does get progressively harder as time goes on, basically it gets
faster and faster as you continue through the level. There are only a few levels
on this unlike Geometry Dash which has 21 and in my opinion this game is a lot
easier than it. Fun fact that I learned about this game is that it was created
on Unity3D, which gives me hope that this game is completely possible to make.
The game was co-developed by Kiloo and SYBO Games companies from Denmark. To make
this game I found a YouTube playlist of someone doing a bunch of tutorials on
how to create an infinite running platformer exactly like subway surfers. Here
it is:
This channel would also be very useful for its other tutorials because it has created a lot of video on how to make games in unity. For this game I would love to learn how to do a coin system. Unlike geometry dash where you are tying to complete various different levels in different speed and difficulty modes, this game has a points system ‘coin system’ where over time you gather coins to unlock different skins or different characters for the game. It is an in-game currency basically. I would love to learn how to create this in game currency because I do think that it would be a bit of a challenge but a fun one at the same time, definitely YouTube would be a big help in creating this in game currency system. Also designing the levels for this game would be great fun, like Subway Surfers its all to do with trains and I can really design this game whatever way I want it.
For the third idea for a game that I would love to create, if found there is not really an actual game out there from my research that is like the game I was thinking of. There are in fact some browser games out there that are quite like play. So, for this game I would like to create a maze runner game where there are a series of levels, each with different difficulties and it would be a scary game also, meaning that there would be something/someone hunting you and you have to find your way around the maze to the end to get to safety also whilst completing objectives. A game that I found could be somewhat like this is Slenderman. Slenderman is a game where you are a character in a level, you are to find eight pages to complete the game, but it is not as easy as you may think. Whilst you are looking for these pages you are being hunted by the monster Slenderman, at tall and scary dark figure that hunts people when alone, also this Slenderman can transform into tress making it hard to spot him on forestry levels. As you collect the pages the harder it is to win because the monster gets more aggressive.
What I was thinking is somewhat like how Slenderman operates, you must make your way through a maze finding different objectives and the monster would progressively get harder to avoid as time goes on. The game would have to be quite dark and eerie to create the environment that I would be looking for. Again, I looked up different ways in making a game like Slenderman and making a maze runner game on YouTube for tutorials that could help me in achieving the goals that I want. I believe the task in making this game would not be too difficult to complete because many a people have tried to recreate all sorts of games like this and have made tutorials, but there is no official game. For this project I would love to learn all about how to get the monster to hunt you as you play and to get him to follow. This in my opinion would be the hardest task in creating this game, but here is something that I found about on YouTube that could help with this problem that I have:
For the fourth and final game that I would like to look at and design on Unity would be a game like Jenga. Now there are a few mobile games out there that you can play with people online/with your friends and are ok to play. What I would plan for this game is to make it something like the progression system somewhat like the game 8 ball pool. 8 ball pool is a game linked with Facebook where you play against people in a 1v1 pool game. There is a levelling up system in that game and there is also a shop where you can buy new skins for your pool stick etc. So with the Jenga games that are out there at the moment on the market they are pretty simple in my eyes, you go onto the game and play a game of virtual Jenga versus either your friends or a random person online. If I was to create a Jenga liked game I would have the levelling up system and store system like 8 ball pool, you could change how blocks look in the game with buying skins in a store with in game currency and also you could get exp to level up each game you win and lose. In my opinion I think this game would be quite easy to create because it seems that there is a lot of tutorials on how to create a game like Jenga in Unity3D on YouTube and also games like 8 ball pool.
For this project I would love to
learn all about physics in Unity, for instance if a Jenga block was to fall I
would love to learn about how it would fall on the ground and disappear also how
to make the whole Jenga tower fall at the end making it look fairly realistic
when it falls. Personally, I think that this would be the hardest challenge to complete
this game in Unity but, there is plenty of help there.
Overall, there the four games I
would love to create also they are in order of what I like the most to the
least. I also tried to make it, so the games are completely different in style,
and not to unrealistic since this is my first time creating a game in unity,
and also the time frame that I would have.
Hey Sam,
ReplyDeleteMan do I love horror games bro, that idea to do a classic horror maze game sounds amazing, I used to love playing the classic slender-man game where you find the pieces of paper in the forest while running from slender-man. I think sound and environment is so important when it comes to horror games so id definitely focus on those aspects if you plan on doing the maze type game. Good luck man!
